Lip Lift

A lip lift surgery, also known as lip lifting, is a cosmetic procedure for individuals who are not satisfied with the appearance of a short upper lip. When the reddish-pink part of the lip is proportionally short, the upper lip looks smaller and the distance between the nose and the lip may appear longer than average. Some people try to hide this by applying makeup to lift the lip line, but this method is temporary.

A lip lift aims to reduce the distance between the upper lip and the base of the nose. By shortening this space, the procedure can create a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance. Unlike fillers, which increase lip volume, a lip lift repositions the lip upward, enhancing the visibility of the upper lip when smiling. This can help the lips appear fuller and give the face a livelier expression.

When Is It Applied?

A lip lift is often chosen when the distance between the upper lip and the nose is relatively long, making the face look tired or aged. A thin upper lip may be caused by aging, genetics, tissue loss, or the limited effects of fillers. It may also occur when the upper teeth do not show properly while smiling, which can affect the aesthetics of a smile. A lip lift can help improve this appearance.

Techniques and Procedure

Several techniques can be used depending on the anatomy of the nose-lip distance and the desired cosmetic outcome:

• Subnasal (Bullhorn) Lip Lift: A strip of skin is removed under the nose, lifting the upper lip upward.

• Central Lip Lift: Enhances the central part of the upper lip (Cupid’s bow).

• Corner Lip Lift: Small incisions are made at the corners of the lips to correct drooping.

• Direct (Gullwing) Lip Lift: Small incisions along the upper lip border remove excess skin for more definition.

The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia and lasts about 30–60 minutes. The area is marked, excess skin is removed, and the lip is placed in its new position. Finally, aesthetic sutures are applied to close the incision.

Recovery and Post-Operative Care

After surgery, swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort may occur in the upper lip area. These effects are temporary and generally subside within days. Stitches are usually removed within a week or dissolve naturally. During the first days, patients should avoid hot or hard foods, keep the lip area relaxed, and limit exaggerated facial movements. Light activities are allowed, but pressure on the lips should be avoided.

Healing typically takes several weeks, with the final results becoming noticeable within a few months. During this period, the lips often take on a more symmetrical and refined shape.
